Welcome to the June mLearn 2008 newsletter keeping you up-to-date with the latest news about the conference.

Keynote speakers

For those who don’t know, all keynote speakers have now been confirmed.  The conference will start with a keynote presentation from Professor Diana Laurillard, Professor of Learning with Digital Technologies at the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education.  Marc Prensky, writer, consultant, and designer in the critical areas of education and learning will head up the afternoon.  Thursday 09 October 2008 will hear from Dr Mike Short, Vice President of Research and Development at O2 and MDA Director responsible for Public Policy, along with Vanessa Pittard, Director of Evidence and Evaluation, Becta.  Professor Yrjö Engeström is Professor of Adult Education and Director of the Centre for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research at the University of Helsinki will provide the session for the last day of the conference.  The mLearn conference team are particularly pleased with the collection of speakers and concur that it looks to be an exciting event.

Submissions and Reviewing Process

Submissions for papers closed a while ago and the response has been extremely positive so thank you to everyone who submitted a paper or poster for the conference.  As submissions have now closed we are pleased to announce that we have received a large number of papers.  These have been submitted from America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia, and early indications are that the quality is first rate.  Together with the recent confirmation of key-note speakers, we are confident that the statement which has been on the front page of our website since last year "We would very much like to welcome you to our conference in October, and can assure you of an event that will surpass your expectations!" is a promise we are going to deliver on.

Reviewing is almost at an end and we hope to be able to contact all authors at the earliest opportunity.  Although it was originally stated that authors would be required to register their attendance by 11 June 2008, due to the unavoidable extension of the review process, an extension of the registration period will also be given.  Authors are required to register their attendance preferably no later than Monday 28 July 2008.  We apologise for the delay in notifying authors and we hope to be in contact with you all very soon.

Papers accepted for the conference will be published into formal proceedings with ISBN number and a complimentary copy will be available for each delegate at the event.  Additional copies can be purchased throughout the conference office.

Registrations

There has been a very positive response since registrations opened and we are experiencing a high level of booking,  There are still a few places left at the complimentary welcome reception at the Madeley Court Hotel and if you would like to take advantage

of a place, please make sure you register as soon as possible.

The registration page will allow you to opt to pay by either debit or credit card or by invoice or if you would like to pay by any other method, please could you contact Abi Redmond before registering so arrangements can be made

Sponsorship

We are pleased to announce that Nokia join Toshiba and The University of Wolverhampton as one of the conference’s main sponsors.  There are discussions taking place with various national agencies and other commercial organisations and further details will be available on the website once they are confirmed.

Technology

Since the last newsletter, the technology for the conference badges is progressing nicely.  Chris (the Technology Chair) will be updating Facebook on a regular basis so if you are interested in the progression, visit our Facebook page (search for mLearn2008 or contact Abi who will send you the link)

mLearn 2008 Bookshop

During the conference, there will be a Waterstones bookshop open at the conference venue.  The shop will stock publications from the keynote speakers and other presenters and we are also hoping to be able to hold a book launch during the first day of the conference.  If you are attending the conference and have written any publications in the past relevant to the conference themes, please feel free to let us know about them and we will endeavour to get copies in stock.  Obviously space is limited so we will have to make the final decision on which books will be for sale however we will endeavour to get as wide a cross section of publications as possible.  Please contact Abi in the first instance.
