mLearn Pre-conference workshops Print E-mail

mLearn 2008 will be offering pre-conference workshops as a taster before the conference officially opens on Wednesday 08 October 2008.

 

The pre-conference workshops will run throughout Tuesday 7 October 2008 and the majority of these will be held at The Park Inn, Telford unless otherwise stated. There are workshops that will last for half a day and some that are full day events. 

 

The workshops will (unless otherwise stated) include attendance at the workshop, refreshments and lunch. 

 

Please note morning sessions (09:00 - 12:30) will finish with a lunch and networking opportunites and afternoon sessions (13:30 - 17:00) will start with lunch and networking opportunities.

 

You do not have to be fully registered delegate of mLearn 2008 conference to attend the sessions and as places are limited, it is advisable to book early.  If you have any queries regarding any of the workshops, please contact Abi Redmond, Conference Co-ordinator in the first instance.

 

 

 


DETAILS OF PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

 

 

WORKSHOP: 'How to design your own Mobile Learning Object - design learning episodes that are appropriate for mobile devices'

 

FACILITATOR:  John Cook, London Metropolitan University

DATE:  Tuesday 07 October 2008

TIME:  09:00 - 12:30

COST:  £50 per delegate (inclusive of VAT, lunch and refreshments)

 

OUTLINE:

This workshop will introduce participants to the principles of Mobile Learning Objects (MLO's) design and the templates, tools and methods used by the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Resuable Learning Objects (RLO-CETL) for MLO creation, embedding in practice and evaluation.  The workshop will comprise a lively and engaging mix of short presentations punctuated by focussed activities in small groups which will feed back to the whole group.  The central focus of the workshop is 'desiging learning that is appropriate for mobile devices'.  Activities will take place in hands-on, small break-out groups facilitated by roving presenters.  As well as getting hands on experience of MOL's, particpants will work on poster-sized blow-ups of the templates to brainstorm and create learning designs in groups.  Designs created during the workshop will be compared, discussed and evaluated by all participants.  The design voted by workshop participants as benign 'most appropriate for mobile devices' will be implemented by the RLO-CETL team and digitally archived, along with other outputs, to the RLO-CETL website for subsequent download and perpetutaion beyond the temporal span of the workshop.

 

INTENDED AUDIENCE

The workshop will be of interest to researchers, educators, multimedia developers, educational technologists, IT and support staff, instructional designers, content providers, staff developers, administrators, e-learning champions and anyone with an interest in MLO's, their effective development and deployment and the pedagogical effectiveness of e-learning.  No prior experience is necessary other than a willingness to participate in hands-on content creation activities.  Beginners are welcome!

WORKSHOP: 'Podcasting for teaching and learning'

 

FACILITATOR:  Palitha Edrisingha, University of Leicester.

DATE:  Tuesday 07 October 2008

TIME:  13:30 - 17:00

COST:  £65 per person (inclusive of VAT and lunch and refreshments)

 

OUTLINE:

Podcasting is capturing the imagination of educators, learning technologists and researchers.  This half-day workshop will enable practitioners to engage with empirically-tested transferable models for using podcasts and to consider options for developing podcasts and evaluating student learning.

Research-based, disciplinary-specific pedagogical models are needed to support practitioners in applying podcast technology with already established institutional e-learning contexts.

The content and the activities for this workshop is derived from a large-scale research project entitled IMPALA (Informal Mobile Podcasting and Learning Adaptation), funded by the UK Higher Education Academy, which examines how student learning can be supported by the use of podcasts.

As a participant you will:

  • gain insight into podcast models from a variety of subject disciplines and institutional contexts and their transferability
  • learn how podcasts can be used to address specific teaching and learning challenges
  • apply the 'IMPALA pedagogical model' for developing podcasts
  • develop and record your own podcast
  • consider the intergration of podcasts into institutional VLEs
  • review research tools to evaluate student learning, and
  • receive a FREE copy of the book Podcasting for Learning in Universities (2008). Editors: Gilly Salmon and Palitha Edirisingha, McGraw-Hill, London.

WORKSHOP: 'An Introduction to Mobile Learning'

COST:  £150 per person (inclusive of VAT and lunch and refreshments and a complimentary handheld computer will be provided for each participant to use and keep)

 

OUTLINE:

The workshop will provide an in introduction to newcomers to mobile learning,  Opening with an overview of how mobile learning has developed, the workshop will combine presentations, practical activities and group discussions. 

The aim is to give participants:

  • an appreciation of the technologies involved
  • awareness of some of the practicalities of purchasing, deploying, utilising, evaluating, supporting and researching mobile learning
  • useful links and references for additional information

WORKSHOP: Evaluating Mobile Learning:  Approaches, Methods and Tools

TIME:  13:30 - 17:00

OUTLINE: 

The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners of mobile learning to exchange ideas about, and experiences with, addressing the challenges of mobile learning evaluation.  Focusing on a practical evaluation task, participants will have the chance to reflect on evaluation practices and explore issues relating to evaluation approaches, methods and tools.  Beginning at the workshop and continuing throughout the conference, we will explore the use of mobile and Web 2.0 technology in collecting and analysing data on the mobile learner experience. 

 

The workshop leaders are co-editors of a forthcoming book on Research Methods in Mobile and Informal Learning (Vavoula, Pachler & Kukulska-Hulme, Ed., Peter Lang Publishing, September 2008) and will be sharing their extensive knowledge and practical experience of conducting evaluations of mobile learning.

OUTLINE:  This workshop will offer a practical demonstration of the Mobile Learning work taking place in Wolverhampton.  After the briefest overview of Mobile Learning theory, come and explore with real learners and practitioners, the range of activities that has made Learning2Go such a national and internationally renowned initiative.  Breakout activities will include:
